Tonight we had a great class at Childwall Dojo (Liverpool, UK) - It was the 1st session since our instructor, Sensei Roy Flatt, got back from training at "The Chief Instructor's Gasshuku", held in Fuzhou, China. The lesson tonight was what Sensei called "Advanced self defence", with a set of attacks/blocks constructed to be used against attacks at 3 levels of the body (an attacks to the head, to the chest and one to the groin). These combinations were all practiced with a training partner, several times.
Later in the session we spent some time practicing Sanchin kata - the "core" kata in Goju-Ryu karate-do. Sensei explained the concepts behind the kata's performance and we concentrated on the muscles used during each technique in it. Sanchin employs many muscles in one's back to be performed to it's fullest. Each with a training partner we went over some strength exercises especially tailored for improving the muscle groups used for Sanchin kata.
